The film is set in the town of Sommerton Junction, where Ray Owens (Arnold Schwarzenegger) is the sheriff. Ray is a former LAPD narcotics detective who has moved to Sommerton Junction to leave behind his violent past. The town, with a population of a little over 3,000 people, is peaceful and uneventful for Owens and his deputies, Sarah (Jaimie Alexander), Mike (Luis Guzmán) and Jerry (Zach Gilford). Everything changes when notorious drug kingpin Gabriel Cortez (Eduardo Noriega) escapes FBI custody in Las Vegas and heads for the Mexican border in a specially modified high-speed Corvette ZR1.
Cortez is pursued by FBI Agent John Bannister (Forest Whitaker) and his team but escapes across the border, leaving the FBI team stranded. Along the way, he kills various people and holds an injured hostage, Ellen (Genesis Rodriguez), who he uses as a human shield. Cortez plans to cross the border using the peaceful town of Sommerton as the last stop on his escape route. He makes use of a gang of ruthless mercenaries, led by Burrell (Peter Stormare), who are willing to use any means necessary to help him escape.
When Owens receives news that Cortez is headed for Sommerton, he and his team prepare to stop him. The sheriff and his deputies draw up a plan to block the only way in and out of town, which is the Sommerton Junction Bridge. Owens and his team must face off against Cortez and his team of mercenaries, who are armed with a cache of weapons and have access to advanced technology. The desperate race to catch Cortez before he crosses the border becomes a battle between life and death.
The Last Stand is a thrilling action movie that delivers on the promise of its trailer. The film has a retro feel to it that harks back to the classic action movies of the 1980s and 1990s. It has a lot of gunfights, car chases and explosions that keep the adrenaline pumping from start to finish. The action is well choreographed and executed, and the violence is not excessively graphic.
Arnold Schwarzenegger is solid as always, playing the tough and unflinching sheriff who takes charge and leads his team into battle. Forest Whitaker gives a commendable performance as the FBI Agent who is willing to do whatever it takes to catch the bad guys. Johnny Knoxville is funny as Lewis Dinkum, a local gun enthusiast who provides some much-needed humor. The rest of the cast is also good and helps to flesh out the story.
The Last Stand was not a commercial success, but it is a decent movie that is recommended for fans of action thrillers. The film has all the elements of a great action movie, including a charismatic lead, a worthy villain, and a high-stakes scenario. The film's setting in a small town adds an extra layer of tension and drama to the story. If you are looking for a fun action movie that will keep you entertained, The Last Stand is a great choice. It is not likely to be ed as a classic, but it is definitely worth watching.
