In this city filled with diverse communities, musical genres and lifestyles, the documentary follows up and coming artists, who blend classical Israeli music with modern and alternative beats to produce something wholly unique.
Kutiman, a musician and producer, who was born and raised in the city of Tel Aviv, has built an international following by reimagining Israel’s popular genre, Mizrahi music, and blending it with funk and soul. The film takes viewers on a ride along with Kutiman, as he visits the record store that he describes as the town’s musical heart and hanging out at his favorite studio, showcasing his prowess as a producer and one of the pioneers of the modern Israeli music scene.
Karolina’s story, in contrast, is about taking local narrative styles and using them to express universal themes. She came to Tel Aviv from the Soviet Union as a child, and in this documentary, she tells the story of how she came to incorporate her Russian roots into her music, combining them with traditional Yemenite sounds. The music that she creates is an eclectic mix of different elements for a distinct, fusion sound.
Yemen Blues is a band that carries the soul of Yemenite Jewish music, fusing it with contemporary world music songs. Led by lead singer, Ravid Kahalani, Yemen Blues blends sounds from all over the world, including Africa, Yemen, and Israel. The film follows the band during their performance at the Yellow Submarine, a venue that has gained significant recognition for being the go-to hub for live music in the city.
Finally, the documentary features Onili, a singer, who creates sonic landscapes and combines experimental sounds with traditional melodies. Born in Tel Aviv, the singer talks about how music opens doors to unknown worlds and how she loves trying out new things.
