Revanche is a 2008 Austrian drama film directed by Götz Spielmann. The movie is set in Vienna and centers around four characters – Alex (Johannes Krisch), a small-time criminal, his girlfriend Tamara (Irina Potapenko), Robert (Andreas Lust), a police officer and Susanne (Ursula Strauss), Robert’s wife who works at a brothel.

Alex and Tamara live in a small apartment in the city and work for a brothel. Alex is unhappy with his life and wants to leave Vienna with Tamara to start a new life. However, their plans are interrupted when Tamara is killed in a police raid on the brothel. Alex becomes distraught and wants revenge on the police officer responsible for Tamara’s death.

Meanwhile, Robert, the police officer responsible for Tamara’s death, is struggling with his own marital problems. His wife Susanne is unsatisfied with their life and their inability to have a child. Susanne finds comfort in a new client at the brothel where she works, and her infidelity leads to consequences for all the characters involved.

Revanche is a slow-paced movie that explores themes of revenge, love, and loss. The characters are well-developed and their motives are understandable. Alex’s pain and desire for revenge is palpable, especially in the tragic scene where he breaks down in his car after learning about Tamara’s death. Robert’s guilt over Tamara’s death is also believable and adds another layer of complexity to the storyline.

The movie’s cinematography is noteworthy, with beautiful shots of Vienna’s architecture and landscapes. The film’s use of color also adds to the overall mood – scenes of Alex and Tamara’s apartment are dark and ominous, while scenes of the countryside outside Vienna are bright and colorful.

One of the strengths of Revanche is its ability to keep the audience guessing. The movie is full of twists and turns, and the characters’ actions are often unexpected. The film’s ending is satisfying without feeling contrived or predictable.

Overall, Revanche is a thought-provoking and emotionally charged film that explores themes of justice, loss, and love. The movie’s pacing may be slow for some, but the well-drawn characters and the film’s beautiful cinematography make it a rewarding watch.
