Given the current vitriolic exchanges in the press, one would assume that "men of science" and "men of faith" have been implacable enemies since the construction of the first lectern and the first pulpit. But, oddly enough, this has not always been the case. In fact, glancing across the centuries of Western civilization, science and religion have, more often than not, mutually accommodated one another. Men of science and men of faith not only shared one another's beliefs, but often were one and the same person. However, swords have been drawn at certain times and the line drawn between religion and science.
