The Northerners is a 1992 black comedy that verges on the surreal and the absurd. It is a Dutch movie set in a 1960s rundown housing development. The entire movie takes place on a single street. Van Warmerdam directed the movie, and he was nominated for the International Fantasy Film Award. The story is about a young boy named Thomas. Family problems with his mother and father result in Thomas becoming fixated on news broadcasts. He becomes obsessed with the liberation of the Belgian Congo and takes on the identity of the Congo liberation leader Lumumbia. If you are into surreal movies, this may be a perfect movie for you.
