As they set off on their journey, they come across a group of balloon enthusiasts who are preparing for a big race. One of the balloons, a blue and yellow one named "The Shooting Star," catches Thomas's eye, and he is inspired to try his hand at hot air ballooning.

With the help of Harold the Helicopter, Thomas sets out to build his own hot air balloon. He gathers materials from around the Island of Sodor and, with the help of his friends, he constructs a beautiful red and yellow balloon.

With his new balloon complete, Thomas s the race, against the advice of his friends who warn him that hot air ballooning is not as easy as it looks. As the race begins, Thomas finds himself soaring high into the sky, but it soon becomes clear that he is not in control of his balloon.

As he struggles to steer the balloon, he ends up flying over dangerous terrain and narrowly avoiding disaster. With the help of his friends, and some quick thinking on his part, Thomas manages to safely land the balloon.

The movie ends with Thomas and his friends delivering the important parcel to the depot, much to the delight of the people waiting for it on the remote island.
