Wishin' and Hopin' is a charming coming-of-age comedy drama set in the small town of Three Rivers, Connecticut, during the vibrant and colorful Christmas season of 1964. Based on the best-selling novel by Wally Lamb, the story follows the adventures of Felix Funicello (Wyatt Ralff) - a chubby, smart, and innocent fifth-grader of Italian descent, who dreams of escaping his boring and often embarrassing family and becoming a famous artist.

Felix's life is filled with quirky and lovable characters, such as his eccentric and superstitious teacher, Sister Dymphna (Molly Ringwald), his rebellious and tomboyish classmate, Rosie Proctor (Quinn McColgan), and his overprotective parents, who run a roadhouse diner and feud with their Greek neighbors. Despite the Christmas spirit and holiday cheer that surrounds him, Felix is struggling to survive the daily rituals of Catholic school, including a Nativity play, a book report on To Kill a Mockingbird, and a radio contest with a big prize.

Along the way, Felix learns valuable lessons about friendship, family, love, and loss. He tries to impress his crush, Shelby (Phoebe Jonas), by giving her a stolen gift and writing her a love letter. He also helps his father (Danny Nucci) and his uncle (Chevy Chase) catch a thief and save their business. He even witnesses a miracle when he meets an angel (Mary Stuart Masterson) who shows him what really matters in life.

Despite some missteps, Wishin' and Hopin' is a heartwarming and nostalgic movie that captures the spirit of the 1960s and the innocence of childhood. The production design and costumes are eye-catching and authentic, from the school uniforms and the hairstyles to the decorations and the music. The acting is also delightful, especially Ralff, who embodies Felix's awkwardness and resilience, and McColgan, who steals the show with her spunk and vulnerability. The ing cast is equally enjoyable, including Ringwald, who brings her trademark charm and humor to Sister Dymphna, and Nucci, who adds depth and humor to Felix's father.

The movie, directed by Colin Theys and written by John Doolan, also enhances the book's themes of cultural and generational clashes, as well as the joys and sorrows of growing up in a changing world. It may feel a bit formulaic at times, with its predictable plot points and sentimental moments, but it never loses its sincerity or its sense of fun. Wishin' and Hopin' is the perfect family-friendly movie for the holiday season, evoking memories of a simpler time and reminding us of the power of hope and imagination.
