Appare-Ranman! is a Japanese anime television series that aired in 2020 on AT-X. It tells the story of two unlikely companions, Appare and Kosame, who find themselves on an adventure of a lifetime. The show is set in the 19th century and follows the two as they participate in a transcontinental race from Los Angeles to New York.
The series features Lin Gothoni as Appare, a brilliant inventor with a ion for engineering and cars. Emi Lo takes on the role of Kosame, a timid and reserved samurai who is dragged along on Appare's journey. Ivan Jasso plays Al Leon, an American cowboy and Appare's main rival in the race.
One of the striking things about Appare-Ranman! is its unique blend of genres. The show combines elements of steampunk, westerns, and samurai stories to create a thrilling and imaginative adventure. The story is fast-paced and exciting, but it also has a surprising amount of heart and character development.
The show introduces us to the two main characters, Appare and Kosame, in the first episode. Appare, a gifted inventor, has been working on a steam-powered vehicle for years, and he finally decides to put it to the test in a race across America. However, he has trouble finding anyone to drive with him, as his reckless and eccentric personality tends to push people away.
Kosame, a samurai who has lost his way, accidentally stumbles upon Appare's workshop and gets caught up in his dangerous plan. Despite his reservations, Kosame agrees to be Appare's co-driver, and the two set off on their journey.
The series does an excellent job of balancing Appare's wacky antics with Kosame's somber backstory. While Appare is initially portrayed as a chaotic and unpredictable character, we soon learn that he is driven by a deep need to prove himself as an inventor. Likewise, Kosame's serious and reserved nature masks a lot of pain and regret from his past.
As the two travel across the United States, they encounter a colorful cast of characters, including Al Leon and his team of racers. Al is Appare's main rival and an accomplished cowboy who is determined to win the race. His character provides a fun contrast to Appare, as he is much more grounded and practical.
The show also introduces us to a variety of other racers, each with their own motivations and personalities. From the cool and collected Xialian to the hot-headed TJ, the series does an excellent job of fleshing out all of these characters and making them feel like part of the world.
Of course, one of the most significant draws of Appare-Ranman! is the racing itself. The show features thrilling and well-animated races that keep us on the edge of our seats. We see our heroes struggle to keep up with the competition as they face all sorts of obstacles, from wild animals to dangerous weather conditions. The races are also a great showcase for Appare's many inventions, which range from grappling hooks to explosive devices.
Overall, Appare-Ranman! is a fantastic anime that combines humor, action, and heart. The show's unique blend of genres and well-drawn characters set it apart from other series, and its thrilling races provide plenty of excitement. If you're a fan of inventive storytelling and high-stakes competitions, this is definitely a show to check out.
