Growing up, Aoi was constantly teased by her classmates for her unusual gift, and her parents never believed her stories. Her grandfather, however, always believed her, and would tell her fascinating stories of Ayakashi since he, too, could see them. After her grandfather ed away, Aoi was left with a lot of debt and, without anyone else left to turn to, the company of Ayakashi, who offered to take her to their world.
Enter The Hidden Realm, where she meets the demon prince, Odanna, who owns a Bed & Breakfast called Tenjin-ya. Aoi bargains with him to pay off her grandfatherâs debt by working as a chef in his inn. Odanna, initially arrogant, starts to appreciate Aoi's tenacity and work ethic as she tries to put her personal touch into his inn's dishes.
The story delves into the daily life of the occupants of Tenjin-ya and other narratives that tie back into Aoi's main story of working and living with the Ayakashi. Along the way, she encounters personal problems that the residents of the inn try to help her resolve, and as she forms bonds with them, she learns more about herself, her grandfather, and the supernatural world.
The animation and art of Kakuriyo -Bed & Breakfast for Spirits- is absolutely mesmerising, with stunning design and landscapes consistent with its otherworldly vibe. The colour palette is a combination of dark shades and pastel colours, which creates a unique atmosphere that's both mysterious and comforting. The background music complements the visuals appropriately, and the voice acting is outstanding, especially from the lead roles.
If you're someone who enjoys a relaxing, feel-good anime with a sprinkle of comedy, action, and supernatural elements, then Kakuriyo -Bed & Breakfast for Spirits- is the perfect anime for you. The show explores different types of Ayakashi, such as the Kitsune, Tengu, and Oni, each with their own customs, characteristics and personalities. It also explores human and Ayakashi relationships, discrimination and acceptance, and how both worlds co-exist.
One of the strengths of this anime is its character development. Aoi, in particular, transforms from a quiet and reserved girl to a confident chef who knows what she wants, and her individual relationships with each of the residents in the Inn change her as a person.
In conclusion, Kakuriyo -Bed & Breakfast for Spirits- is a hidden gem that flew under the radar in 2018, but worth indulging for its refreshing storyline, exceptional animation, engaging characters and catchy soundtrack. It's a heartwarming show that reminds us that acceptance, understanding, and kindness are vital elements of the human experience, both in the supernatural and human world.
